Last night over 90 people, including City Councillors, Boat Building Industry Representatives and various delegates gathered at the Volvo Pavilion at the V&A Waterfront to listen to Mike Sanderson, skipper of team Sanya, tell his Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 leg 1 tale. He wanted to speak to tell the story of their endeavour as well as extend a thank you to the Cape Town Boat Building Industry.

24 hours into the race, that left from Alicante, Spain on the 5th November, Team Sanya hit something in the water, drastically damaging their boat. They decided to repair the boat in Cape Town.

“I immediately contacted Uwe Jespersen from Jaz Marine”. Said skipper Mike Saunderson. “ Uwe was a huge help to me when I was here with ABN AMRO in the 2005 race and so I knew that he was capable of doing a great job, unfortunately this close to Christmas though he didn't have the time to throw at the project, but he amazingly offered his facility and their services to assist in all material orders. We then flew in a team of six boatbuilders from Salthouse Boatbuilders in NZ, the Salthouse boys have done a lot of work for me in the past and for this campaign had already built new daggerboards and rudders. They built the new part at Jaz Marine and then fitted it at the V&A  Waterfront on Wharf 2. The final part of the process was done by Ashdown Marine,  a British company that specialises in the fairing and painting of Elite Race boats. Collectively the team has been unbelievable and I want to extend a big thank you for all the help that we received in Cape Town!!
